Most of the problems that occur in the windows operating system are caused by some missing system file in your hard disk.  Even now there are many who simply reinstall the system to resolve this problem although it is very time consuming to reinstall the existing drivers and applications.

     If the problem is caused  by a missing or damaged system file in the hard disk, you can actually take the file from the windows xp setup CD.  Previously, with windows 98, you could take it from the DOS menu or from the special application software from other manufacturers.  Now, with windows xp, u can simply take one or many files from the setup files.

• The first thing that you should do is to remember the name and location of the missing or corrupted file.
• Then, from the ‘ start –> Run –> menu type ‘msconfig’ and click ‘OK’
• Ensure the ‘General’ tab in the ‘ System Configuration Utility’ window is opened.  At the lower right hand section, click the ‘Expand File’ button to open the ‘Expand’ window.
• Now you can type out the name of the missing or corrupted file in the ‘File to Restore’ Section, then click the ‘CAB’ file from the windows xp setup CD at ‘Restore from’, and finally set the target folder at the ‘Save file in ‘ Section.
• Click ‘Expand’ to start the process.  When the file is saved into the target folder, close the ‘Expand’ window.
